7 Ways You Can Damage Your Skin
Have you ever wondered where those fine lines and wrinkles came from when you look at your reflection in the mirror? Or noticed the tiny spider veins on the sides of your nose? Well most people are causing damage to their skin, especially on their faces, without even realizing it. Listed are 7 ways that you might be doing damage to your skin:
1. Not Using Enough Sunscreen
Many of us went out swimming or tanning in our backyards as teenagers without a care in the world for sunscreen, but years later our skin is still feeling the effects of those poor decisions. It can be something as simple as enjoying a day shopping or walking your dog and not applying enough, if any, sunscreen. Use an oil-free sunscreen daily – it won’t clog your pores and will keep your skin beautifully protected.
2. Tanning Beds
These dangerous little machines were thought to be the perfect remedy to avoid the sun, until we learned that they were causing more damage in the long run than the sun. Tanning beds will cause skin cancer, age spots, fine lines and wrinkles…and this will start in your 20’s. No joke.
Well there are quite a few reasons that smoking is bad for you and should be avoided, but how about adding in the wonderful wrinkle-enhancing effects to the mix? Yeah, the more you smoke, the worse every part of your body looks and feels….and smells! So, to prolong your life and keep you looking and feeling younger, stop smoking!
4. Scrubbing your skin too harshly
Most people have done this at one point in time, but we do not realize how negative the effects can be until we see them appearing years later. Try using gentle products on your skin, without any harsh chemicals, and never use anything that scratches your skin to get it clean. Sugar granules are about as rough as your skin can safely handle, and that’s only a couple times a week!
5. Acne Removal
Remember those days of just wanting to squeeze that one little pimple to make it stop hurting or less noticeable? Well that one little pimple turned into more and each one turned into a small scar. Scarring can take up to a year to clear and sometimes if enough damage is done, can stay permanently. So no more picking and popping!
This does not often get mentioned because it’s a touchy subject, but overeating can cause damage to your skin that may not be able to be reversed without the aid of surgery later on in life. The more overweight people get, the more their skin stretches out. Once the weight is lost, the skin can’t always rubber-band back to where it was. Keep that in mind before you grab that one last guilty pleasure before heading to bed!
7. Loss of Sleep
Sleep is highly underrated, as are its effects on your body. If you happen to miss out on a lot of sleep, you are also robbing your skin of its rejuvenation and restoring time. If you want your skin to look and feel better, then do what you can to make sure you are getting at least 8 hours of sleep a night.
Treat Your Skin With Respect
These little things can add up to a lot of damage in a very short amount of time. If you have been guilty of one, two, or maybe all of these bad habits, then do what you can starting now to take care of your skin. After all, it’s the only skin you’ve got and it deserves to be treated well.
