ManilaMed #SheFeelsBetter Campaign

International Women’s Month is celebrated every March; it is the day or month to celebrate women and their achievements. And it is well-timed and vital to empower and enable them, since half of the world’s population are women.  A campaign was organized for the celebration of International Women’s Month by ManilaMed titled “#SheFeelsBetter”. ManilaMed is passionate about highlighting women’s health and empowering women with accurate health information. That’s why it has a center dedicated for women – The Center for Women’s Health.

It is being neglected in the past the importance of a women’s health. But today, it is being realized by society that men and women may have the same diseases but their symptoms and treatments may not be the same. There are many health issues regarding women’s health, and cancer is one of them.  Two of the most common cancers affecting women today are breast and cervical cancer. And having early detection is the key in keeping women alive and healthy. According to the latest global figures, each year, half a million women die from cervical cancer and another half a million from breast cancer. Many of these deaths occur in low and middle income countries where screening, prevention, and treatment are almost non-existent, and where the HPV vaccine has yet to take hold.

According to the World Health Organization, some of the sociocultural factors that prevent women and girls to benefit from quality health services and attaining the best possible level of health include:

    • unequal power relationships between men and women;
    • social norms that decrease education and paid employment opportunities;
    • an exclusive focus on women’s reproductive roles; and
    • potential or actual experience of physical, sexual and emotional violence.

During the celebration of Women’s Month, ManilaMed brings out the word by having a simple event where nearby schools like Araullo High School, Emilio Aguinaldo College and Santa Isabel College were engaged in a poster making contest.

In addition, ManilaMed provided a dedication wall filled with flowers as representation for Filipino women. There, the general public was given a chance to show their thoughts for women by completing the sentence: “A True Filipina is…”.The theme of the poster making contest coincides with the theme of ManilaMed for Women’s Month – #SheFeelsBetter.

ManilaMed’s Center for Women’s Health is the first center in the country that acts as a one-stop shop for the diagnosis and treatment of conditions that are specific to women. It houses 5 major units: OB Ultrasound, Breast Ultrasound Center, Fertility Enhancement Center, Maternal & Fetal Medicine, and Colposcopy & Cryotherapy Center.
