The Best Cutting Board Material Based On Your Needs

They say that the kitchen is the heart of the home. And we have to believe it’s true. Whether small or large, the kitchen is the hub of the home. It is where the meals are created – it fuels the bodies, minds and souls of friends and families all over the world.

It is true that having the most essential cooking tools in your cupboard will make your life so much easier. Although the kitchen world comes out with sleek, trendy, and exciting kitchen gadgets all the time, that doesn’t mean you need to buy every single one to be able to cook well. In fact, the most basic tools like knives, a good cutting board, large pot, non-stick pan, glass bowls and other cooking utensils are all you need to start cooking delicious meals.

If I need to choose only one cooking tool or let just say my most favorite cooking tool, I would choose the cutting board. Hmmm. You might be wondering why would choose the cutting board of all the cooking tools that are available, right?

A good cutting board is a workhorse in any kitchen. A reason for having a good cutting board is just simple – it protects both your knives’ blades and your countertops. Cutting directly on your counters is comparable to running your knives through a grinder. Cutting boards provide an extra layer, keeping marble and other materials safe from scrapes, scratches and stains.

Cutting boards also help with hygiene when preparing the food and effectively simplify the cleaning process. By purchasing two cutting boards (if you have a budget) made of either plastic or wood, you’ll also avoid the risk of cross-contamination especially during this time of pandemic. Just use one cutting board for meats, and the other for everything else.

Cutting boards are also like knives: There’s something for everyone. Professional kitchens use color-coded plastic. One of your friends prefers wood; another favors bamboo. So when it comes to choosing what’s right for you, rest assured you have options. But not all cutting boards are created equal. Sizes and shapes vary significantly and between different types of wood, plastic and wood fiber composites, you have a lot of options.

When it comes to selecting a cutting board there are three main factors for you to consider: the material the board is made of, the amount of surface area and the thickness.

Wood cutting boards

Cutting boards made from wood are typically aesthetically pleasing, particularly premium end grain boards. They won’t unnecessarily dull your knives’ edges, and their weight makes them sturdy enough to stay put while you chop. Wooden boards can also last for years, if not decades, if properly cared for.

Plastic cutting boards

Plastic cutting boards provide a lightweight, colorful, dishwasher-safe alternative to wood. But cutting on them also leaves lots of grooves where bacteria can hide.

Bamboo cutting boards

Bamboo cutting boards are technically not made of wood but grass, as bamboo is a type of grass The bamboo is also sturdier than most, making it highly functional in the kitchen: It’s particularly moisture-resistant (it won’t soak up stains or create a breeding ground for bacteria), and so sturdy that it’s essentially warp- and crack-proof. It won’t scar much, either, so your bamboo cutting board can be used both in the kitchen and on the table.

It is super easy to clean a bamboo cutting board. The one thing to remember is never to soak these cutting boards. A bamboo cutting board does not need to be submerged in hot water and soap to be cleaned.
