Understanding The Different Types Of Anxiety Medication For Children

Treating a child with anxiety often requires lots of trial and error with your pediatrician. Anxiety in children may present itself with a variety of symptoms, such as not paying attention at school, crying a lot, moodiness or misbehavior. The key is to work with your pediatrician and mental health counselor to come up with a customized treatment plan for your child. With anxiety, there may be a combination approach with medications, counseling and behavior management plans. Parents need to do research and check out Brillia reviews of medication and other sources of feedback. Here is what to know about the different types of anxiety medication for children.

ADHD Medication

Some children with ADHD also have anxiety. This may be part of their ADHD diagnosis or a separate anxiety disorder. Children with ADHD may struggle with some executive functioning tasks, such as paying attention, listening and impulse control. Kids with anxiety and ADHD may also have worries about pleasing their parents and teachers. Many parents and children have found success by using ADHD medications to manage the symptoms. The most popular ADHD medications are stimulants. Parents can also consider natural ADHD medication for kids to avoid stimulant side effects.

Antidepressants

Antidepressants are also prescribed for children with anxiety. In many cases, depression and anxiety go together and are related. Child mental health professionals may prescribe selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs for younger patients with anxiety or depression. Patients may also be prescribed serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors or SNRIs for anxiety and depression. These powerful drugs often carry the risk of serious side effects, such as suicidal thoughts. Parents should work together with a doctor to weigh the risks and benefits of antidepressants for their child.

Anti-Anxiety Drugs

Anxiety can also be treated on its own with antidepressant medications and other remedies. Some doctors prescribe children benzodiazepines if they want to avoid the potential side effects of SSRIs and SNRIs or if those classes of drugs are contraindicated. Another option is to look for natural anxiety medication for kids. Doctors may combine these treatments with therapy and counseling to improve the prognosis.

Antipsychotics

It’s also possible for physicians to try treating young people with antipsychotics for some types of anxiety disorders. Most antipsychotics are primarily used for bipolar or schizophrenia patients. Obsessive-compulsive disorder and general anxiety disorder may be treated with some antipsychotic medications. These drugs may help reduce the symptoms of anxiety that children may be suffering from. They may have some side effects, such as weight gain, muscle spasms and a sedative effect on some children or teens.

Symptom Remedies

Another approach is to simply focus on treating the symptoms of anxiety instead of the disorder. Children with physical signs of anxiety, such as insomnia, sweating, increased heart rate, fatigue, loss of appetite or stomach problems may get relief from remedies to soothe these specific symptoms. Doctors must work together with the parents to design a proper treatment plan that helps the child.

If your child suffers from anxiety, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. There are different ways to treat childhood anxiety and give your child some relief and rest from anxious thoughts and physiological symptoms.
