In a world that’s constantly changing, conversations about sustainability feel more important than ever. And during BDO’s recent “Sustainability in Focus” Virtual Learning Workshop, those big ideas suddenly felt a lot more personal, practical, and doable.
The first session, led by Communications Officer Elle David and facilitated by UP-CIFAL Philippines, took us straight to the heart of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We explored what they truly mean, why they matter, and—most importantly—how each of us can play a role in shaping a better world for generations to come.
It was one of those workshops that sticks with you. Even after logging out, I kept thinking about the small changes we can all make and the bigger impact they can create. It reminded me that sustainability isn’t just a global goal—it’s a personal journey we can start today.
Understanding the SDGs: More Than Just 17 Icons

The SDGs rest on five foundational pillars, each representing a core principle of sustainable development:
- People –ensuring everyone lives with dignity, free from hunger and extreme poverty.
- Prosperity –enabling economic and technological progress that uplifts lives without harming the environment.
- Â Planet – protecting our home by addressing climate change and preserving natural resources.
- Peace – recognizing that lasting development flourishes only in stable, conflict-free societies.
- Partnership –fostering global collaboration, because no country or community can achieve sustainable development alone.

Hearing the SDGs through these pillars made sustainability feel less abstract. It became clear that it’s not just about recycling or planting trees—it’s about fairness, cooperation, and long-term thinking for people and the planet.
Philippines and the SDGs: A Story of Steady Progress
According to the Sustainable Development Report 2025, the Philippines is among the fastest-improving countries—gaining +8.6 points since 2015 and moving from 98th place in 2024 to 87th in 2025. The progress isn’t perfect—but it’s steady, encouraging, and worth celebrating. It reflects a growing national effort to align decisions, policies, and community projects with sustainable development.
Turning Awareness Into Action: How We Can Integrate SDGs Into Our Own Projects

The workshop also introduced a practical framework for applying SDG principles in real-world initiatives—ideal for educators, leaders, students, or anyone hoping to spark positive change. The steps were simple yet powerful:
- Explore the Problem –Understand the issue deeply. Who is affected? What are the root causes?
- Set the Goal –Identify which SDGs align with the problem and define clear, inclusive, eco-friendly objectives.
- Â Brainstorm Solutions –Generate creative and realistic approaches that empower communities.
- Develop an Action Plan –Map out timelines, responsibilities, resources, and potential partners.
- Â Evaluate the Project –Reflect: Did it work? Who benefitted? What can be improved?
This part of the workshop felt empowering because it showed that sustainable development doesn’t require a big budget or a fancy title. It simply needs intention, structure, and heart.
How BDO’s Find Ways For Sustainability

The second session, led by Marla Garin-Alvarez, First Vice President and Head of BDO’s Sustainability Office, highlighted how BDO has embedded sustainability into its operations—from governance and risk management to lending and product development.

BDO’s Sustainable Finance Framework—one of the most comprehensive in the country—covers 29 eligible categories, aligned with global standards such as:
- Renewable Energy – BDO’s renewable energy funding has reached ₱1.04 trillion since 2010, supporting 63 large-scale projects that generate 2,679 MW of clean energy annually—equivalent to removing over 1 million passenger vehicles from the road each year.
- Blue Bond Impact – financed projects provide solutions to address clean water supply scarcity and ocean pollution prevention (US$50 million out of US$100 million for three businesses in Bulacan, Tarlac, Rizal)
- Social and Gender-Responsive Financing – the bank supports employment generation, food security, affordable housing, gender-inclusive businesses, and women-led enterprises.
- Green Buildings, Clean Transport & Water Management – BDO’s sustainability bonds have financed top-rated green buildings, clean transport systems, and projects that save more than 2.6 million cubic meters of water annually while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by tens of thousands of tons.
These milestones show that financial institutions can uplift communities, strengthen the economy, and protect the environment—all at the same time.
From Advocacy to Action: Social Media’s Role in Sustainability Education

The third and last session was presented by Malou Talosig-Bartolome, journalist and social media producer, who focused on how sustainability narratives can be more effectively communicated on digital platforms.
With Filipinos spending roughly four hours a day on social media, online spaces have become powerful avenues for influencing eco-habits, sharing knowledge, and driving advocacy.
The Heart of Effective Sustainability Content
According to the session, impactful content must be:
- Authentic – grounded in real stories or personal experience
- Approachable – using relatable language, visuals, or humor
- Empowering – offering solutions rather than guilt
The workshop emphasized:
- Verifying information before posting
- Citing credible organizations (UNEP, IPCC, PFCN, WWF, etc.)
- Avoiding vague claims like “eco-friendly” without evidence
- Staying updated, as climate data evolves quickly
Malou introduced the C-2R Framework—a simple yet powerful guide for digital sustainability storytelling: Clarity. Relatability. Responsibility. When used together, content becomes not just engaging—but trustworthy and transformative.
A Shared Journey Toward a Sustainable Future
BDO’s “Sustainability in Focus” workshop wasn’t just a learning experience—it was an invitation. It reminded us that sustainability isn’t a buzzword or a corporate tagline. It is a long-term commitment built through collaboration among businesses, educators, advocates, content creators, and everyday Filipinos.
The path toward a greener, more inclusive future is something we build together—one informed choice, one responsible story, and one sustainable action at a time.
Kudos to BDO for leading the way in sustainability!
